Summer Agricultural Internship for teens

Monday June 17 to Friday August 2, 2024

The Good Works Summer Teen Agricultural Internship is a seven week experience open to local teenagers between the ages of 14 and 17.  The 2024 internship is 3 days each week from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. It begins the week of June 17 and ends August 2.  A stipend of $500 will be paid at the end of the internship, to each intern that completes the program.

The purpose of the Teen Ag. Internship is two-fold:

First, we seek to provide a meaningful service to our neighbors in the Athens County community.  Each year, Good Works staff, volunteers and interns assist in the start up and maintenance of approximately 10-15 gardens located at the homes of some of our Athens County neighbors.  Many of these neighbors are experiencing some degree of food insecurity as a result of a struggle with economic poverty, disability and/or aging.  Teen Ag. Interns will have the opportunity to work alongside these neighbors in an effort to cultivate both productive gardens spaces as well as meaningful relationships.

The secondary objective of the Teen Agricultural Internship revolves around character development.  This internship is intentionally structured in a way that encourages personal growth in each of the interns.  We seek to see each participant grow into higher levels of maturity and competency in the areas of leadership, work ethic, compassion, team work and healthy life/work habits.  Teen Ag. Interns work alongside Good Works staff and Summer Interns who consistently encourage and challenge each intern to greater levels of ownership, maturity and responsibility.

Finally, it is our hope that each Teen Ag. Intern leaves the program with a basic knowledge of how to raise a garden and a heightened awareness of where food comes from.  Good Works embraces a sustainable approach to agriculture.  Consequently, interns will be exposed to a range of agricultural concepts such as organic gardening, composting, improving soil health, natural weed and pest prevention and raising pastured chickens.
