Peter Smith
Ezra had determined to study and obey the Law of the Lord and to teach those decrees and regulations to the people of Israel. Ezra 7:10
Hello, I’m Peter. I joined the staff at Timothy House in August 2025. I consider myself a native Midwesterner. I spent my childhood in St. Louis, Missouri (Go Cardinals!) and then went to high school and college in Anderson, Indiana. I met my wife in college (in our college choir, to be specific). We lived and worked in Ohio, Florida, Massachusetts, and Indiana before landing in Athens in 2016. As an avid cyclist, I love riding up, down, and around the hills of southeast Ohio.
I also grew up in the church, attending children’s church and then getting involved in our church’s youth group. As a teenager, I felt a call to ministry, and so I went to college with the intention of becoming a worship pastor. After a period of reflection and consultation with a faculty mentor, I felt my call being clarified as a vocation of theological education. After 10+ years, I recently completed graduate degrees in theology and church history. I also began pastoring a small, rural church in our district.
I spent a lot of time studying “the Law of the Lord” and the history of the church. I even started preaching in church and teaching in classes. But the apostle James says that “genuine religion means caring for orphans and widows.” I felt I was one of those James criticized for not being a “doer of the word.” I knew of Good Works through church contacts and reached out to inquire about getting involved. I am excited to see what this season of service and solidarity will bring.
