Dekota Toot
I first came to Athens with the intention to study at Ohio University and then leave the area to pursue a higher degree elsewhere. Then God called me to stay here in Athens County. As it turns out, God’s plans for us are better than the plans we make for ourselves. In the spring of 2018, I began volunteering at our home for people without homes, the Timothy House. That Summer I became a summer service intern, living and working in Christian community while leading groups of volunteers to visit and do projects for our neighbors in our Neighbors Helping Neighbors initiative.
Now I have returned to Good Works for a second time as an Appalachian Immersion Intern. Athens has become home for me, but more importantly Good Works has become home for me. The people here are genuine in their love of God, neighbor and each other. We are told that, “The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death.” (Proverbs 14: 27) It is so life giving to me to serve alongside my brothers and sisters in Christ as we learn to submit our lives to God, pursuing the ministry he has called us to right here in Southeast Ohio.
